The History of Rancho Santa Fe
Rancho Santa Fe was founded as Rancho San Dieguito, a Mexican land grant made between 1836 and 1845 to Juan MarĂa Marron (the first mayor of San Diego). In 1906, the land that is now Rancho Santa Fe was sold to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company, which renamed it after the second transcontinental railroad to reach California. The Railway planted extensive groves of eucalyptus trees in the hope of having a near-inexhaustible supply of raw material for the railway ties they needed to expand in the Western American market. Eucalyptus wood, however, proved too soft, splitting when the spikes were hammered into it. The land was later sold off cheaply so the railroad could attempt to recoup some of its investment in the land.
Rancho Santa Fe gained popularity between World War I and World War II and became a playground for Hollywood stars in 1937, when the Del Mar Racetrack opened a few miles to the west. Del Mar Racetrack founder Bing Crosby is credited as an "early settler" of Rancho Santa Fe and was famous for hosting annual clambakes on the golf course at the Club. The present-day luxury tract home development "The Crosby Estates" located east of the village of Rancho Santa Fe was built on the site of his former estate.
